Stainless Steel Valves
Dedicated readers may remember the CRF450R engine rebuild story that Dirt Rider did working with Tokyomods (Oct. '06). One facet of the story was the decision to install stainless steel valves in place of the stockers. We were looking for longer valve life, and we now have 150 hours on the Tokyomods valves and they've been adjusted only once at the same time we replaced the piston. Tokyomods' stainless steel valves are a great choice for off-road riders and racers. Stainless is more durable than titanium, and the TM valves are coated with a black nitrate coating claimed to improve airflow and reduce friction. The good news is the valves retail for $70 each, which isn't much different from stock prices. They do, however, require Tokyomods' Performance Spring Kit for $249.95. The kit includes spring seats, springs and OEM retainers. If the engine is used, it will require valve guides at $19.95 each. The labor to install and hone the valve guides and cut the valve seats is $159.95. Any worn head would need the same attention if stock parts were used, so the price difference isn't great. Our experience has been that the stainless steel valves last a great deal longer than the stockers. The same bike and rider were getting roughly 50 hours with the stock valves. -Karel Kramer
