Dietrich smashed the $&!# out of a pinky toe, tried to gut it out at Guthrie (Okla.) and ended up breaking it again – News Release

IRVINE, Calif., (Sept. 9, 2010) – Hometown off-road racing hero Ricky Dietrich (Snohomish H.S.) will be back in action this weekend when round four of GIECO AMA EnduroCross, presented by E3 Spark Plugs, goes off at Everett’s (Wash.) Comcast Arena on Saturday night, Sept. 11.

The Monster Energy/Kawasaki great and former EnduroCross champion (’08)  is battling back from a foot injury best described as “gnarly” – the result of a practice crash while training for World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) races in Washington this past July.

“I was riding at a pretty high rate of speed and just caught my foot on something, probably a stump,” said Dietrich. “I smashed the crap out of my pinky toe, to the point where the bones were sticking out of it.”

Dietrich had the toe stitched up and set – as best you can set a pulverized pinky toe bone – and came back to race the Guthrie (Okla.) EnduroCross round  … where he ended up breaking it again. “After that I was like Man – and ended up sitting out the next EnduroCross round (Indianapolis). It was tough missing the Indy round, but I had to let it heal.”

Dietrich says the swelling’s finally gone down and he’s been back on his bike, running some laps at Cahuilla Creek motocross track in southern California on Wednesday afternoon when we caught up with him. He said that despite being away from the EnduroCross scene for the better part of a month, he’s pumped to be back – especially to race in front of his hometown friends and family.

“Not being at the races makes it so you can lose that competitive edge, so I think I’ve lost a bit there,” he admitted. “But we’ll be back after it at Comcast Arena on Saturday night. It’s all part of the game and I’m down with racing in front of the hometown crowd for sure.”

EnduroCross tracks incorporate various elements of off road racing into a supercross-style setting, including rocks, boulders, logs, sand, mud, a water-hole … and even a few special obstacles like giant tires thrown in! Known as the “toughest racing on two wheels,” this indoor version of extreme off road racing will certainly keep you on your feet. With its excitement and unpredictability the EnduroCross championship has always gone down to the wire and this year will be no different as the series starts and finishes at Vegas’ Orleans Arena!
