We expected this comparison to become a showdown between two-strokes and four-strokes, but it remains a contest requiring a complete performance résumé.

Kawasaki's engine updates for 2004 allow it to exit turns with more boost.
Kawasaki KX250
Weight (ready to ride, no gas): 225 lb
Sound test: 95 dBA
Retail price: $5599

What's Hot!
• Very nimble feeling on the track, but still offers surprising stability.
• Suspension very good for fast, light riders.
• Ergonomics are comfortable for shorter riders.
• Bike stays feeling and looking new after riding.
• Engine has great midrange, nice clutch action and crisp shifting.

What's Not!
• Most riders weren't happy with the feel of the KX fork during big impacts.
• Low-rpm roll-on could be better, and there is not enough high rpm pull or overrev.
• Riding position improved from '03, but still the most compact of all the bikes.

• Hydraulic clutch is very nice and has an easier pull this year.
• Power is monster fast and responsive but still very easy to ride with good tractability.

What's Not!
• Seat can feel a little low for taller riders.
• Gearing feels too low stock.

• Shifting is good, and ratios fit power.
• Ergonomics are comfortable and slim, and the seat is easy to shift position on.

What's Not!
• Dark color shows wear a bit more than the other bikes.
• Fork is jittery in square-edged chop.
• Engine is a little prone to pinging.

Yamaha YZ450F's best features are fine suspension and beaucoup power.
Yamaha YZF450
Weight (ready to ride, no gas): 230 lb
Sound test: 98 dBA
Retail price: $6299

What's Hot!
• Motor makes seriously big power at any spot on the rpm range.
• Starting is the best of the four-strokes; all but effortless and foolproof.
• Engine carburetes perfectly with little tendency to hiccup or stall.
• Lightest four-stroke in test.

What's Not!
• Motor pulls so hard that it demands deft throttle control.
• Power can fatigue you quickly if you don't ride it properly.
• Seat is very thin and poorly padded, and heavy riders will feel the seat base.
• Center of gravity feels higher than the other bikes, so it feels as if it drops into turns.

FMF Racing Dynojet Report: SAE Horsepower at engine RPM (x1000).

The shootout this year is very close. All of the manufacturers did a great job with their homework, and each bike had its specialties. If it had been allowed, I would have ranked the KX250, RM250 and YZ250 as tied. Instead, I had to look at minute differences. The KX is a great package. The suspension rules for my weight and riding style. I trusted it the most on the scary parts of the track. The engine isn't the fastest, but it is solid and easy to control.
